Honeymooning Dreamin’

Every blushing bride has their own wedding style! Some choose to get married barefoot on the beach in a simple dress, while others walk down the aisle in a fancy hotel or country club in a designer ball gown. There are destination weddings, backyard weddings, themed weddings, and yes we have all seen pictures or videos of underwater weddings (do they make waterproof yarmulkes?) Where you get married and how you get married says a lot about who you are and what’s important to you. Choosing where to go on your honeymoon is very similar, while you don’t get the luxury of visiting possible vacation venues, you do have the ability to dream up the perfect location that fits your honeymoon style.

First ask yourself about your honeymoon style. Are you looking for adventure? Do you dream of white beaches in paradise? How about a Euro Moon? There are many exotic locations in each of these categories, and I, for one, can help you find the perfect match for every budget, but it’s up to you to find your style and how you want to spend your honeymoon days and nights!

The Adventure Moon
If the traditional honeymoon doesn’t thrill you and lying on a beach is a bore, there are many exotic locales that will tickle your adventurous bone! How about kibitzing with zebras and lions? Break out your khaki pants, pith helmet, and leopard undies to get in touch with your wild side on an African Safari. You can visit places such as the Singita Game Reserves (“place of miracles”) which is world-renowned for providing “the best safari experience in Africa!” There are numerous award-winning lodges and safari experiences to choose from. Kruger National Park and its great lodge options is another South African locale that will benefit those who want to enjoy South Africa’s last great wilderness in peace. The Kruger is known for its superb bird-watching and its native creatures include buffalo and lion, kudu, leopard, warthogs (just like Pumba!), baboons, hippo and crocodiles. Visitors can slow down and experience the rhythm, sounds, and cycles of the bush and you can see for miles and miles, and never catch sight of another person!

The “All You Need is a Bathing Suit” Moon

I know its cliché but spending your honeymoon surrounded by crystal clear water and sipping a pina colada with your toes in the sand is sometimes just what the doctor ordered after a stressful yet fabulous year of wedding planning. The sky is the limit when it comes to tropical luxury, so depending on your budget you have a plethora of places where you can get your relaxation on! Bora Bora and Moorea are perhaps the most popular honeymoon and reality-escape destinations! Resorts such as the Sheraton Moorea and the St. Regis Bora Bora are slices of heaven on earth. While the price tag on a Tahiti Moon will have you scream “Oy vey!”, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you should not pass up! When will you ever get the opportunity to stay in an over-water bungalow and go directly from snuggling in bed to snorkeling with the fishies?! To quote a very good friend of mine who spent her moon in Bora Bora… “It’s possibly one of the most incredible places in the world!”

If you merely want to brush up on your Spanish or stay in the States, you can have just as much of a tropical experience visiting the beaches of Mexico or the Aloha State. The Four Seasons Punta Mita is a breathtaking resort that is surrounded by nine unbroken miles of high sandy coastal dunes. Punta Mita is a local adaptation of the Aztec word mictlan, which means “gateway to paradise,” and that it is! The One and Only hotels around the world are amazing, one of which is the Palmilla in Los Cabos. With gorgeous accommodations and balconies looking out over the Pacific Ocean or Sea of Cortez, you will wish you could set up permanent residence there.

Island hopping is yet another great way to spend your sunny honeymoon. Hands down, my favorite spot in Maui is The Grand Wailea. This unrivaled property with tranquil gardens and magnificent views is a must stay! Don’t miss the artwork including the “Celebration of Marriage” statue by a renowned artist. A visit to Spa Grande is something you can’t miss during your stay, but don’t forget that even though you are on your honeymoon, it doesn’t mean you can’t be a kid at heart! Meander down the 2000 foot river pool, and take a ride up the world’s first water elevator and then whirl down the many water slides, followed by a hop up onto a seat at the swim-up bar to sip on your favorite tropical cocktail.

Honeymooners can also be found at the amazing Four Seasons Lana’i, Four Seasons Hualalai, and the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island, and many more fantastic properties in between. Hawaii will always be the vintage honeymoon getaway as it should be; there is nothing like sitting out on your lanai in the land of hula, watching as the sun sets into the Pacific, hand-in-hand with your honey!

The Euro Moon
This is not your backpacking, hostel-staying, college trip. This is your luna di miele, your ??? ??? (yerach d’vash), your mí?nas tou mélitos (that’s Greek)! You can honeymoon in any language, and enjoy the culture as you enjoy each other. You will be exhausted, not to mention spend a ton of moolah if you try to visit more than two places on this type of trip unless you do it the way my husband and I did, which was a fantastic Mediterranean Cruise on Princess Cruise Lines. In 12 days, most funded by the American dollar, we visited Monte Carlo, Nice, Cannes, Florence, Rome, Venice, Capri, Santorini, Mykonos, Corfu, Athens, and Turkey. It was the best of all worlds being able to see the majestic places we dreamed of while experiencing the food, culture, sights, and sounds — all via the most luxurious floating city! If you don’t have your sea legs just yet and cruising is not your cup of Turkish apple tea, I would opt for a land vacation and stay a few nights in Santorini and the outer Greek Islands. Oia on Santorini remain one of the foremost tourist attractions of the Aegean Sea, and is where I would love to go back to spend some more time. The views are something out of a travel magazine or painting, and the food is out of this world! Opa!!! If you wish to take a lune de miel in France, book your time in Nice and Cannes along the French Riviera; this would make an ideal, romantic ooh la la! During the Cannes Film Festival the InterContinental Carlton is the most prestigious place to stay, so even if you are not making your very own movie (wink wink) you can at least get the VIP treatment at this posh and famous hotel!

If the shoe fits, you must a-clip

After last week’s post about wedding shoes, I got on a shoe kick and started to look up creative and cost-effective ways to be fashionable on the wedding day. Sometimes you may already have the perfect pair of shoes in your closet that are comfortably broken-in, but may need a little spruce up for the special day. Some wedding bloggers get excited about cakes or dresses or flowers. I like to dress up the feet. So shoe me. Er, sue me.

Shoe clips from Emmaline Bride change the entire look of a shoe you may already own. These unique accessories are easy to attach to the shoe, adding a splash of color or texture depending on your personal style.

Buying new shoes for the wedding day could cost you hundreds of dollars depending on the designer and style you select. If you have a pair of shoes you already like and feel comfortable dancing and standing around in, then you can wear those and no one will even know that they’re not brand-spankin’ new. Plus, if you are wearing a long dress, the main body of the shoes won’t even show. However, your tootsies would look so caaah-ute with the little poof of color peeking out under the dress.

We love that even after the wedding day, you can rewear the clips on other pairs of shoes and you’ll enjoy nice memories every time you see them.

So You Think You Can Yenta

If you’re anything like us, you looooooove looking at pictures of Real Weddings! And if you’re a recent-ish bride or wedding vendor, you want to be part of an installment of Real Weddings! And we want you, too! It’s really a match made in Yenta heaven. Let’s face it. We all have an addiction and a right to enjoy some guilty pleasures. Get your head outa the gutter! We’re talking about dresses, and flowers, and centerpieces, oh my!

If you get twitches and jitters about how complicated it must be or that it takes soooooooo long, stop it right now! Stop it, we say! It’s easy as pie (why is pie easy? Who thought of that cliche? It’s horrible!). Today we’re give you a step-by-step guide for submitting your Real Wedding!

1. Go through your images. Select about 15 to 20 of your favorite hi-res photos and make sure to include key moments and details! Remember, The Wedding Yentas is a Guide for the Jewish Bride, so you’ll want to include traditional details like the chuppah, walking down the aisle with parents, drinking from kiddush cups, a tallit, breaking the glass, the hora, and chair lifts. You don’t have to include all of these; we’re just giving you ideas! Also, you can’t forget wedding eye candy: the details shots. Brides want to see escort cards, place settings, aisle decor, and programs. Sending key moments from the wedding day like getting ready, first looks, the ceremony, and gettin’ down on the dance floor are important as well. Remember: these have to be hi-res, professional photos so you can’t go clicking through your Facebook or iPhone albums for pictures. Only the best for Yentas readers!

2. Once you’ve selected your photographs, next you prep them for the site. We have created a Photoshop action that resizes the images and gets them all ready to be showcased.

The Photoshop download can be found at:
/yentas/wedding_yentas.zip

What if the idea of using Photoshop gives you the willies similiar to when you think about the Passover plagues? No fear! The Internet has provided us with other options. You can send us your wedding images as a .zip file (this may require 2-3 emails since the folders can get very big even as .zip files), or use the wonderful options out there such as Dropbox.com or YouSendit.com. These sites allow you to upload photos, enter our email address (info@theweddingyentas.com) and the files are sent right over so we can upload them!

3. Email us (info@theweddingyentas.com) with a complete list of vendors and links to their websites. We want to make sure we give your vendors team some Yentas love! Here’s a list of vendor types you may want to provide us:
Venue
Photographer
Videographer
Florist
Bakery
Band/DJ
Caterer
Bar
Coordinator
Makeup Artist
Hair Stylist
Ketubah
Bride’s Dress (store and designer)
Bridal Party Dresses
Groom’s Tuxedo
Shoes
Jewelry
Veil
Favors
Stationery (invitations, escort cards, table numbers)
Wedding Rings/Jeweler
Chuppah
Yarmulke Provider
Honeymoon Travel

You have no idea how much of a help this is! Any vendor that was part of your wedding — even down to bathroom rentals or wedding day insurance — should be sent to us! We like to link back to as many vendors as possible.

4. The last step in the process is emailing us (info@theweddingyentas.com) a story! We want to make sure our readers fall in love with you and your wedding! The photos you submit will be gorgeous, yes, but there’s often a great story about the couple that makes the gush even gushier! Consider a “how we met” story, the how/when/where of the proposal, or a funny and sweet anecdote from the wedding day. The story should be submitted in 3rd person (no “I” or “we” or “our”) and don’t worry about feeling pressured to make sure it’s English major-perfect (that’s our job!).

That’s it! We welcome brides, coordinators, photographers — anyone involved in a wedding! — to submit a feature for our Real Weddings posts. We showcase Real Weddings on Tuesdays and Thursdays and we’ll let you know if your submission has been prepared and scheduled for publication so you can brag, Tweet, blog, and Facebook all about your fame!

p.s. You can also submit a wedding via Two Bright Lights. What is Two Bright Lights you ask? TBL is an image sharing site that makes submitting weddings to a whole slew of editorial publications…including us very simple. Just click on the image below to be directed to the site and learn all about how to create an account, download weddings and submit them straight to The Wedding Yentas!

Woo ‘em With Your Shoes!

When it comes to the big day, you’re probably focusing on the big things: your dress, your veil, your hair, your jewelry. But there’s one thing that you can’t snooze about: your shoes.

After you choose your wedding gown, it’s important to make sure you settle on and purchase what’s going on your feet. Soon, you’ll begin having regular fittings and the seamstress can’t make the appropriate alterations if your wedding day height isn’t solidified. I, Yenta Alison, typically stand at a Herculean sixty inches, and on my wedding day, I suddenly grew an additional 2.5 inches thanks to the glory of heels. My feet were comfortable and I didn’t have to break my neck to kiss my new husband under the chuppah who stands at over six feet tall. Win-win.

Your tootsies need to look great and should be comfortable, so picking out shoes is an important and thought-provoking task. When thinking about styles, consider if you’d like to use your shoes as a way to splash some color into your ensemble or if you want to stay classically bridal. Perhaps you’ll want to have twinkle toes, detailing with gems or beads. Peep toe, closed-toe, or sandal: all kinds of shoes that define your personal and wedding styles.

Also remember that your wedding day is a long day involving dancing, posing, standing, and, of course, that sweet stroll down the aisle. We bow down to you brave ladies who strap some 4-inchers on your feet, but for brides who are looking into more comfortable options or have low tolerance for high elevation, 1 or 2-inch heels are abundant in many styles, colors, and details.

We’ve seen brides enjoy their wedding days in ballet flats, bedazzled tennis shoes, and for that downhome country girl, cowboy boots! You really can’t go wrong. Express your soul with your soles.
