A mutual friend invited Heather and Pete to the Anti Valentine’s Day Party on, of course, Valentine’s Day. Heather remembers being drawn to Pete’s great smile and his somewhat shy and quiet manner. It took him a little while to start talking to her, but once he did, she didn’t want it to end. Pete remembers thinking that Heather was beautiful and so easy to talk to. So he took a chance and asked her out.

Despite the Yankees — Red Sox rivalry between them, Heather and Pete have learned that they are very compatible and have important similarities that shape their relationship. They’ve had a lot of fun traveling and discovering new places together, eating out, or cooking at home. Just being together, and sharing in both the big and little adventures of everyday life is what it’s all about for them.

Fast forward to a lovely evening at dinner, Pete checked his pocket about ten times during the meal, and then, just before dessert, he quietly slid Heather a ring from across the table. She started giggling out of nervousness, and accepted his proposal. They held hands, smiling and laughing the rest of the night. And thus began the journey of planning a Jewish wedding.

Heather and Pete wanted to make sure everyone was up and dancing at the reception so the couple opted to go from the first dance into the Horah and directly into dance music. Speeches and food could wait! Since everyone was on their feet during the Horah, laughing and having a blast hoisting the couple in the air on their chairs, Heather wanted to keep that momentum going by requesting in advance that the DJ continue with “I’ve Got a Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas. The uplifting dance-worthy music kept everyone on the dance floor!

Mazel tov, Heather and Pete!

Real Jewish Weddings | Los Angeles, CA

Joy and Jeff’s relationship is built on travel, love for each others’ hobbies and interests, and being the best kinds of people they can be to each other and in life. They met while studying abroad in Oxford back in 2005, but lost touch for two years. Time works in mysterious ways, though, and after graduating college, they moved to San Francisco and reconnected in the spring of 2007.

Joy and Jeff helped each other grow by sharing their worlds with each other: Jeff got Joy golf clubs for their first Hanukkah together and Joy introduced Jeff to fitness, including yoga because she is a certified instructor. They got engaged over a beautifully cooked dinner by Jeff, and ended up planning their wedding long-distance as the couple moved to Boston as Jeff started his MBA program at MIT Sloan.

With 150 guests in attendance, Joy and Jeff created a meaningful Jewish wedding ceremony stemming from artistic culture. They wrote their own vows and they included a Pablo Neruda poetry reading.

Real Jewish Weddings | Toronto, Canada

Danielle and Andy met 11 years ago on a teen tour that travelled through the American west coast. Their chemistry was undeniable, but being so young and living in different countries (Danielle from Canada, Andy from USA), a serious relationship seemed unattainable. They remained close friends. When Andy turned 21, Danielle came to Atlanta to help him celebrate his birthday and they discovered their connection was intense. They decided that they would rather be together, though miles apart, than not be together at all. After a couple of years of braving the long distance route, Danielle moved to the US and a new chapter of their lives began.

The wedding took place in Danielle’s hometown, Toronto, and they had a traditional Jewish wedding with some added personal touches. Jewish culture views the bride and groom as King and Queen on their wedding day. Keeping with this theme, the wedding colors were royal purple and gold. As well, the wedding invitations contained jeweled tiaras, and the wedding cake was topped with a jeweled crown. The ceremony ring and ceremony kiddush cup were both very meaningful. The cup had been a bat mitzvah gift from Danielle’s late grandmother, and the ceremony ring had been her late grandmother’s wedding band.

Real Jewish Weddings | Beverly Hills, CA

Elana and Scott met at a nightclub in Cancun on a college spring break. They were both attending University of Michigan, but it took a tropical getaway for them to finally meet and begin their love story!

Their wedding was a mirrored reflection of who they are as individuals and a couple. Even though it was a formal location, they wanted to incorporate a more relaxed feeling throughout their wedding. Spanish guitars played for their outdoor garden ceremony, and lush florals, including real lemons and limes, reflected a distinctly California vibe. Guests sipped on lychee mojitos during cocktail hour and “picked” their escort cards from a lemon tree.

Real Jewish Weddings | Buffalo, NY

Lindsay and Craig met through a mutual friend while frequenting Buffalo nightlife. Craig did not formally propose, but rather, the couple came to the realization that they both wanted the same things in life, and that getting married was the first step to achieving them. They both agreed that they would only be doing the whole wedding experience once, so their goal was to celebrate and party, and that was definitely accomplished in a big way! Neither Lindsay or Craig describe themselves as being “formally religious,” and were raised differently, but they both have a great deal of respect for their Jewish family traditions and wanted to incorporate certain aspects of this into their ceremony.

They were married by a cantor under a chuppah, and started the celebration with the breaking of the glass. One of the ways they incorporated family traditions was by having the bride’s father recite a prayer during the ceremony that he used to say to the family. One of the most humorous and memorable parts of the ceremony was when the groom, (who loves a good joke and a good laugh), was playful while walking down the aisle and even pretended to run away! Luckily, his mom caught him by the ear and assisted him in walking down the aisle.
