Wedding planning can be quite a megillah: so many florists to meet, so many cakes to taste, and many gorgeous gowns to try on! While you are over the moon with excitement and busy hashing out all the details, don’t forget that after you say “I do” and after you dance your little tushie off at your reception, you and your honey will get that much needed alone time and relaxation on your very own vacation made for two: your honeymoon!!

There are many ideas of the derivation of the term “honeymoon,” one of which can be found in the Merriam-Webster dictionary that dates back to 1546: “the idea that the first month of marriage is the sweetest,” and in Hebrew it translates to “yerach d’vash,” or honey month.

With iPhones, Blackberries, computers, and iPads sadly taking over our everyday lives, going on a honeymoon is not only a chance to take the much-awaited trip with your honey and escape work and life’s responsibilities, but it’s also a way to truly unplug from the hustle and bustle and focus on your new life together as husband and wife. It’s also pretty awesome to bask in the glory with all the travel perks that come along with being newlyweds!

Couples always ask me when they should plan and book their “moon” and my answer is always right away. The ring is on your finger, the date and venue have been booked, so start thinking about the type of trip you want to take and when. Most traditional honeymoon locations book up and you want to stay ahead of the game and make sure you get exactly what you are looking for! Depending on the departure date of your honeymoon, be sure to prepare as best you can for the upcoming trip.

This is not just any old vacation; you have many things on your mind and wedding plans that are coming to fruition. So make yourself a checklist and ask these simple questions: Is my passport up to date? Do I need travel shots? Do I have the right wardrobe? Should I pack before or after the wedding? Should I wear my sparkler of a ring, or play it safe with a simple band? Your honeymoon planning should be totally stress-free, so don’t wait until the last minute to plan. Pamper yourself and use an expert honeymoon travel agent, such as myself, to help you with every detail to make this the dreamiest “moon” that’s all about you: the happy couple!

Honeymoons have evolved over the years and I am here to tell you that it’s 100% acceptable to break the mold! Your “moon” should be special and specific to whatever you want it to be. There are no rules that apply! Traditionally, the couple leaves on their honeymoon the following day or two after the wedding, but this is not necessarily the case anymore. Couples are now carefully taking into consideration where they want to go, what they want out of their “moon” (besides just alone time, wink wink), and what time of year they want to make this sweet trip! Depending on the locale that you choose, you may need to wait a few month. Let’s be honest: if you get married in December/January and your dream honeymoon is a trip to Alaska, it’s probably not the best time to visit the land of glaciers and salmon. Likewise, if your wedding is planned for July and you love the idea of visiting Australia, you probably have forgotten that it’s mid-winter there! It’s okay to wait. You have waited so long to find your soul mate, and have patiently waited for your turn down the aisle, so it’s all right to take your time and plan your perfect honeymoon!

Your honeymoon doesn’t have to be completely paid for out of your own pocket either! Register for memories that will last a lifetime with a honeymoon registry! This is a popular option for couples that would like to add experiences to their gift list: great as a stand-alone registry or to complement a traditional one. A honeymoon registry lets you create a unique gift list of all the parts of your dream vacation, such as the fantasy suite you’ve had your eye on, relaxing massages, romantic dinners, and exciting excursions.

It works perfectly whether or not you know exactly where you want to go because the gifts are virtual and you receive the cash to use when you’re ready, however you like. Deposit a Gift is a perfect option for a honeymoon registry because of how user-friendly it is it is for you and guests: they offer pre-made lists for easy set-up (look for the blue ‘Rapid Registry’ button!), accept credit cards, and even offer a customer service number in case granny gets fermished.

Here’s how it works:

  • Users make gift registries just like people do with a traditional store registry, using a database of images or by clicking on a pre-made list.
  • Guests choose a gift to purchase, finding the right price point for their budget. They are not actually buying the present, but it feels more personal than sending a check. The money gets deposited into the recipient’s Deposit a Gift account.
  • When users are ready to spend the money, they cash-out in the form of check, VISA gift card or direct deposit.

My husband and I got married in the month of March, yet we dreamed of a Greek/Mediterranean honeymoon, but we soon found that our “moon” would have to wait until June in order to have optimal weather and other tourism factors, so three months later, still newlyweds, we embarked on a wonderful Mediterranean Cruise adventure which we will never forget. Two days after the wedding we were lucky enough to escape to Maui for just a few relaxing days in paradise to unwind and enjoy our “Just Married” status (Brides, I know you want to wear your Mrs. ____ Juicy track suit on the plane!). If you choose this postponed honeymoon, you can always get away for a night, use air miles to go somewhere not too far from home, or drive to some romantic location for a few nights, all while your official honeymoon awaits you! If you are a traditionalist and must go on your honeymoon the day or two following your wedding — you go girl (and guy)! When and where you plan to celebrate the sweetness of your new nuptials doesn’t matter as long as you’re both happy. Whether it’s on a white sandy beach in paradise, or amongs lions and tigers on an African safari, you will be snuggled close with your beshert!

Honeymooning with your honey will be the icing on the cake, the cat’s meow and the bee’s knees! Saying “I do” is just the start to the many adventures you will have together, so don’t let your honeymoon be just an afterthought! This trip marks the newlywed phase of marriage and should you have a little too much fun “honeymooning,” you will soon need to book a Babymoon — but that is a whole other type of trip that we can discuss when the time is right!

From the Expert: Destination Wedding Travel Made Easy

Gloria Emanuelson brings her travel knowledge to The Wedding Yentas today! Her travel company, Honeymoon Dreams and Wishes is Signature Preferred, with contacts in over 22 countries, and specializing in luxury, upscale, travel. This has allowed Honeymoon Dreams and Wishes to build strong relationships throughout the world so that her clients can enjoy the best of the best. Gloria loves nothing more than traveling and attending weddings, so it seems obvious to pair up with The Wedding Yentas to share tips and ideas to brides who wish to have a destination wedding or an unforgettable honeymoon.

Honeymoon Dreams and Wishes

At Honeymoon Dreams and Wishes we offer a variety of services for you including:
Honeymoons, Destination Weddings, Anniversaries, and Romantic Vacations. Because we have traveled extensively throughout Europe, Mexico, Caribbean, Tahiti, Central America, and Hawaii we can “Match” you to the right Destination and Resort.

You may think that because you’re intending to have some sort of Jewish wedding, that there’s no way you could also enjoy a destination wedding. Well, that’s not true. As a a woman who loves weddings and with a big bite from the travel bug, I can tell you that destination weddings are special and memorable.

There are many reasons a destination wedding can be the perfect choice for you and your fiance. Imagine standing on a beautiful beach with the ocean behind, or on a cliff with a village below you, or in a garden with a winery around you — all while saying your vows!

Destination Weddings

Getting married in your own special-to-you locale is such a special way to say “I do!” and will create memories that will last forever. I’ve recently had an opportunity to visit the Cancun/Riviera Maya area and experience for myself how amazing this experience would be. The resorts in the Riviera Maya area, especially, provide so many options for the couples.

If you’re nervous about planning the details of your wedding in advance from afar, take a deep breath and relax. The resorts have wedding coordinators who can assist you with all of your planning so this will really make the planning process easy. They eliminate so much stress and provide you the opportunity to thoroughly enjoy this special time in you lives. You won’t need to worry about the nitty gritty during the other exciting parts of your bridal experience like wedding showers and bachelorette parties. Focus on those events and being present for them. Let your destination wedding coordinator handle the rest with your input, of course.

If you’re inviting a group of guests to join you for your destination wedding, I do recommend hiring a travel professional to coordinate the guests’ travel arrangements. Coordinating how your guests will travel can be quite involved and time consuming, and if the whole point is to relieve you of some of the dirty work, then there’s no sense in you scheduling all of your loved ones, too. A travel professional like me can provide the most cost effective way for your guests to arrive and depart, while also making some luxurious and convenient plans for everyone. We also, often times, have connections with the resorts and this will provide you and your guests with added values you may not receive by booking directly yourself.

So go ahead — close your eyes and imagine your happy place. Want to get married there? It can happen! Mazel tov, on your upcoming wedding!

Mazel Tov! Oh, and Here Are Some Hidden Wedding Costs

Happy New Year! Many of you are Yentas rookies, having just gotten engaged during this holiday season and it’s just all so exciting! First, big fat juicy mazels to you on such exciting news! Second, after you were finally able to take your eyes off your brand new bling, you probably stayed awake at night and made preliminary wedding plans now that it’s socially acceptable to do so. Along with those heady first plans, you start to think about a guest list and then numbers and then dollars and then… and then… Crap, now you have to get out of bed to plug in your iPad and make a Google docs spreadsheet.

Before you execute your Pinterest boards to become real, living ideas that cost money, I want you to start thinking realistically from the beginning. Sure, call me a dream crusher, but you know what stinks more than gefelte fish breath? Having to change your plans halfway through the engagement because you’ve discovered hidden wedding costs and, whoa, surprise!, you’re going to be able to retire at the fun-lovin’ young age of 87.

So here’s my advice to you: You have a budget, right? So stick to it. Price everything out perfectly and know what your wedding will end up costing.

Are you in the clear? Probably. But it’s easy to forget about some “hidden” wedding costs that we don’t exactly think about when we’re making lists and spreadsheets. Big bulk costs like florals or invitations are rather simple to figure, but you don’t want to miss out on counting more silent and un-fun fees so that you can cross every “i” and “t” in your wedding planning alphabet.

Sales Tax
The contract that you sign with each vendor will include their rate and this is probably the figure you’ll count in your planning budget. But make sure you also note the sales tax if it’s not obvious or on the contract. Some vendors will include the sales tax in their rate, but it can’t hurt to confirm so that you’re not surprised later on when the charge goes up (sometimes a few hundred?) in dollars. Also, some vendors may charge an extra percentage for credit card usage. If you’re sticking to a strict budget, you may want to find an alternative way to pay so you don’t have silly credit card fees in addition to your agreed upon rate.

Setup and Delivery Charges
Flowers, cake, chairs, and other wedding elements that might be mobile may also come with a setup or delivery charge. Renting furniture for a lounge area will look cool in your reception space, but unless you plan on hauling the pieces in your own Jetta and arranging them as you shvitz through your wedding dress, it’s a safe bet that you’ll want them delivered and set up. That’s great, but just know that you’re likely going to pay a fee for this service in addition to the rental cost. Make sure you find out what these types of fees are before you commit to the vendor. Also, know that same day tear down and pick up may be an additional charge as well. Knowing these kinds of details will help you calculate your cost and plan with your venue as well.

Overtime
Can’t stop dancing? No one’s leaving the floor to go home? The party’s in full force? Well, mazel tov on throwing a successful wedding reception, but prepare to pay extra for a celebration that goes past its curfew or contracted time. Bands, photographers, and vendors can charge you extra for continuing the party. Your photographer should check with you before leaving to make sure you’re happy and if you want them to stay for additional time. If you say yes, that’s totally okay, but just know that you’ll likely pay an extra hourly cost. Musicians typically function this way, too, and venues will also charge you to keep the lights on longer than you originally anticipated. These are reasonable charges since you’re paying your vendors an hourly rate and they are agreeing to stay past the contracted allotted time. You may have to make a game time decision, but if you’re having the time of your life, it’ll be worth the price!

Photography by Julie Mikos

Stamps
You’ve picked out invitations that complement your wedding’s style and fall within the price you want to pay for them. But how are they going to get to the guests’ mailboxes? Stamps! Guess what, stamps cost money! And, for a flimsy, square inch piece of sticky paper, they actually end up costing a lot more money than you’d probably like to spend. Also, you can’t forget to think about the stamps that go on the RSVP card. To top it all off, if your invitation suite is in an unusual size envelope or in a box, be prepared to pay even more in postage. When it’s time to send those babies off into the big, scary world, take them to the post office where they can be weighed and calculated so you know exactly how much dough you’ll be dishing out. Figure you’ll probably spend anywhere from $200 to $400 in stamps if you are having an average size wedding.

Gifts for Bridesmaids and Groomsmen
Don’t forget to show your gratitude for your wedding party with gifts that usually have some sentimental significance. Between buying a dress or renting a tux, chipping in for a bachelor or bachelorette party, contributing to the shower, and spending miscellaneous cash on accessories, flights, and hotels, the nicest thing you can do is give your inner circle a token of your love and appreciation. The cost tends to cha-ching up to about $50 to $75 per person, according to most brides and grooms, but of course you know best when it comes to these VIPs.

Tips
Some contracts may include gratuity and some may not. You may also be so blown away by a particular service that you feel the need to take out your wallet and add on digits to the final check you write. It’s not always necessary or contracted, but you may want to tip your photographer, videographer, hair stylist, make-up artist, wedding coordinator, transportation driver, bartenders, and servers.

Guests
Yes, you know that each guest costs a certain amount of money, but don’t forget that any little add-ons you make may also mean adding tables (which means adding centerpieces and linens) and chairs (which also means adding covers or rentals) and favors (which also means additional labels, ribbons, and wrapping) and escort cards (which also means more paper, labor, and ink). The list goes on. You get my drift. When you have your final guest list in order, stick to it and don’t start tweaking it because adding people actually multiplies your costs.

Jewish Weddings 101 For Groomsmen

The Wedding Yentas are happy to have Brian Becker guest-blog today! Brian, who is not Jewish and more of a practicing Nothingish, has been the Best Man in a Jewish wedding and brings his expert opinion to the Yentas family of readers. Here he explains what every Jewish bride and groom should tell their non-Jewish wedding party.

I am not a Jewish Bride. I’m not even Jewish. But having been the Best Man, I do have an important piece of advice for anyone getting ready to tie the knot – a little list I like to call “Things to Tell Your Gentile Groomsmen.”

image-courtesy-of-eight20-photography

Look, men are already at a disadvantage because…well…we don’t know about weddings. And unlike bridesmaids who are let in on every little detail, for the most part, nobody tells us anything. So imagine how confusing it can be to be the goyim in the wedding party when the more traditional customs start to unfold. For example…

Yarmulkes. We’ve probably never worn one. In fact, I just had to look up how to spell it. On top of that, we’re expected to fasten it with another foreign piece of hardware: a bobby pin. In my case, the groomsmen did such an abysmal job that the bridesmaids had to do emergency readjustments just seconds before we escorted them down the aisle. So please, do everyone a favor and offer a little kippah 101 in advance.

image-courtesy-of-eight20-photography

Rings. As the Best Man, I was the nearest person with pockets at any given moment. That meant that I was constantly being handed more things to carry. In fact, I ended up carrying three ring boxes (one for the groom, one for the bride and one plain, unornamented ring for the bride to use during the ceremony). Add to that other last-minute cargo like vows and tissues, and the groomsmen can start to feel like we’re wearing saddle bags. Do your best to think through who will schlep around your wedding day accessories – and give that person a heads up!

The Hora. Think for a second what it must be like to witness a giant whirlpool form on the dance floor just moments before someone grabs your hand and pulls you into the vortex. Speaking for the “non-chosen people,” we do not see that one coming. What’s more, we’re expected to hoist the groom up on a chair and carry him around for several minutes. This is a great moment, and a lot of fun. Just make sure you prep your bridal party that some heavy lifting may be required.

image-courtesy-of-meghan-aileen-photography

The Ceremony. If you’re incorporating Jewish traditions into your wedding, it’s a nice idea to explain them in advance. Otherwise, while you’re circling your husband seven times, your groomsmen may be scratching their heads. If you fill the bridal party in on the significance of the customs featured in your ceremony, they’ll be able to share the moment with the rest of your guests, instead of wondering what’s going on.

Take it from a Jewish wedding survivor: A little orientation can go a long way. Make a point to share some your wedding customs with the gentile-men in your bridal party, and you’ll help ensure that every one is relaxed and happy on your special day. Good luck…and l’chaim!

From The Expert: Blinging Out Your Cake With The Perfect Topper

Melissa Dell is the bling queen! During the planning of her wedding in 2008, she wanted to put as much “us” in it as she could. They didn’t have a large budget, and she scoured every possible inch of the web, local resources, and personal contacts trying to complete the vision she wanted, but without spending loads of cash. When she went looking for the cake topper, she had always dreamed of one that was encrusted in crystals. But, when she saw the price tag online, WHOA! Her dream almost faded away. But, after a few different trial runs, they finally ended up with a styrofoam spray painted set that she and her husband covered in crystals. And that was the start of a lucrative resource that can help all brides get the bling they deserve on their wedding day! As the owner of Bling Diva Designs, Melissa is happy to offer design ideas and bridal accessories fulfillment on The Wedding Yentas!

******************************

So you feel like your cake needs a little extra something-something? Could it be more flowers? Ribbon? These are great ideas to spruce up your cake for some confection perfection, but those are all very cliche and “done” ideas. Maybe you want to be different. You really want your cake to stand out.

What about something so spectacular and sparkly, and could be kept as a keepsake for years to come? Bling Diva Designs is the perfect option for you. Started in 2008 after owner & bride Melissa created one for her own special day, the brand has blossomed into custom creations as well as traditional monograms for all types of couples!

JGuess Photography

Melissa’s passionate about weddings and loves to offer advice about the design and crystal choice of the cake toppers. Because she’s a true wedding junkie, her personal eye for style makes sure that the bling topper complements the cake design and wedding decorations.

“I love finding out how each bride has built her dream wedding,” says Melissa. “Sometimes it’s with use of colors, such as the A&G wedding. They used the colors of the peacock feathers to incorporate into their wedding reception. The bride was not going to be taking on her husband’s name, and wasn’t sure what to do on top of the cake.

I suggested using their first name initials, and choosing bold colors to coordinate with the hand painted feature of their wedding cake.”

James Lang Photography and Bling Diva Designs

While the Bling Diva Designs web site offers a great starting place for choosing either single monograms, full monograms, or the popular XOXO topper, custom creations are possible with drawn designs or even the monogram created by outside invitation designers.

Meghan Christine Photography

But why stop at the cake topper? Bling Diva Designs can help incorporate more bling pieces for you. Bridal and bridesmaid bouquets can have monogram accents to sparkle as you and your girls walk down the aisle.

After the wedding, all of the cake toppers and bouquet charms can have the acrylic rods removed and stored in a shadow box along with other keepsakes from your day. You can curate a beautiful collection of wedding mementos like you garter, invitation, jewelry, and Bling Diva Designs creations. You’re not just purchasing an item for your cake. You’re purchasing a treasure to keep for years to come and to always remind you of one of the best days of your life.
